What one can do: Pray for peace
A growing number of people are gathering at 7 p.m. for seven minutes on the 7th of each month to pray for peace. You're invited to join them. The initiative, called "Seven for Peace," was started by a Connecticut laywoman, Kathleen Chesto, D. Min., and is spreading through word-of-mouth, her website, and newspaper interviews.
One group of Episcopalians started July 7 in the gazebo on the Green in Southbury, after weeks of promoting it in their weekly church bulletin.
Read more here about Kathleen Chesto and about Seven for Peace.
Prayers
For Peace During War
For
Peace
Eternal God, in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword
of righteousness, no strength known but the strength of love: So mightily
spread abroad your Spirit, that all peoples may be gathered under the
banner of the Prince of Peace, as children of one Father; to whom be
dominion and glory, now and for ever. Amen. (Book of Common
Prayer, p. 815)
For
those in the Armed Forces of our Country
Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men
and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by
day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations;
give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them
a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP, p, 823)
For
our Enemies
O God, the Father of all, whose Son commanded us to love our enemies:
Lead them and us from prejudice to truth; deliver them and us from hatred,
cruelty, and revenge; and in your good time enable us all to stand reconciled
before you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP,
p. 816)
For the Human Family
O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your
Son: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance
and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate
us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and
confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time,
all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP, p. 815)

Evening
Prayers for Peace
(May be used before the blessing of the meal
at dinner)
Use
any parts of this that are appropriate for you
and/or your family. Begin by gathering at the table
and observing a brief moment of silence. You may
encourage the silence by asking young children
to see what they can hear far away. Can you hear
the sun setting? Can you hear the train? Can you
hear any birds?
Then
light a candle by saying these words: (you may
want to take turns having the children either light
the candle or blow out the match)
ALL: Dear
God, we light this candle to remind us that you
are here, giving us your peace and your love. Amen
READER: Our
help is in the name of the Lord
ALL: Who has made heaven and earth
READER: Jesus
said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I
give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled,
and do not let them be afraid. I am with you.”
Take
a moment to go around the table and each person
thanks God for one thing from the day OR each shares
a moment of peace from the day.
Pray
one or more of the prayers from the other side
of this page.
READER:
That our lives may be holy, good, and peaceful
ALL: We pray to you, O Lord.
READER:
That your holy angels may lead us in paths of peace
ALL: We pray to you, O Lord.
READER:
That there may be peace in our hearts, in our homes,
in our town, and in all our world.
ALL: We pray to you, O Lord.
THE
LORD’S PRAYER: Our Father….
ALL: May the peace
of God, which passes all understanding,
keep our hearts and minds in Christ
Jesus. Amen
